4) Authentic Pilates Helps Release Stored Emotional Trauma
A cause of lower back pain can often be emotional trauma. The psoas muscle tightens in response to both physical and emotional stress. Contacting and shortening is a primordial response to stress as an attempt to protect us from harm. This response, as old as mankind, was useful in stabilizing the body in preparation to stay and fight or turn and run. Today, the trigger is as likely an emotional response to work stress, family stress or just the stress of life. Unfortunately we do not take off running across the tundra or fight our opponents with spears and the psoas muscle doesn’t get its much needed release. There are many exercises in the classical Pilates repertoire that stimulate the Psoas muscle, and as we work to lengthen and release this muscle often clients have a strong emotional release as well. Authentic Pilates can effectively help release stored trauma in the body leading to a sense of peace and well being.

5) Authentic Pilates improves neural plasticity
Neural plasticity is the ability of the nervous system to modify itself both functionally and structurally in response to experience. This neural plasticity is an important component of neural development and normal function of the nervous system. It is important for both anti-aging and allows neural networks to acquire new functions and remain robust and stable. How do we go about developing neural plasticity? Authentic or classical Pilates repeats the same exercises in the same order to stimulate neural plasticity in the brain. The mind and body learn the order of the exercises and the brain is stimulated to lay down new neural pathways and then strengthen and deepen them by repetition of a set order.
